School Lunch Tips
Back-to-school means back to lunch-packing. And, if we’re honest, packing lunches can feel like a daily puzzle. The good news? A healthy lunch doesn’t have to be complicated, and it can actually be fun for kids when they feel part of the process. When children help pick and pack their own food, they’re not just learning about good choices, they’re also more excited to open up that lunchbox and enjoy what’s inside.
When we let kids play a part in their lunch selection and preparation, they’re more likely to actually eat the food they’ve helped choose, reducing food waste (and wasted money!). Something as simple as letting kids choose between apple slices or grapes, or which protein goes into their sandwich, gives them ownership and turns lunchtime into a positive experience rather than a surprise gamble.
Protein is especially important for growing bodies. Unlike quick sugars that give a short burst of energy (and often a crash later), protein fuels steady growth, focus, and strength. Hard-boiled eggs, turkey roll-ups, cheese sticks, yogurt, or hummus with veggie sticks are all protein-packed lunchtime choices. These options are filling, nutrient-rich, and help keep the “lunch box sugar creep” at bay: it’s easy for sweet treats to take center stage when protein isn’t holding its place at the table.
And another cool tip: the container matters, too. A leaky lid or flimsy plastic can turn lunchtime into a mess instead of a moment of joy. The great news is you don’t need to spend a fortune on fancy gear. Simple, non-toxic options like mason jars or glass containers with snap-on lids work beautifully. They’re easy to clean, safe for kids (when chosen in the right size and design), and won’t leach chemicals into food. Hopefully these tips will make your child feel excited to pitch in—making lunch not just a meal, but an experience to look forward to.
