What is Chiropractic?
If you’ve ever heard that unmistakable “crack” and felt instant relief, you’ve already experienced a glimpse of what chiropractic care is all about — but its roots and evolution are far more fascinating than just back cracking!
A quick spin back in time
Chiropractic began in 1895, when Daniel David Palmer, a powerful healer from Iowa, performed the first documented spinal adjustment on a janitor who had lost his hearing. After the adjustment, the man reported improved hearing — and with that, chiropractic was born.
Palmer coined the term “chiropractic,” from the Greek words cheir (hand) and praktos (done by). The core idea? The body has an incredible innate ability to heal itself, and the spine which houses the nervous system are the 2 key communication lines that keep everything running smoothly. From organ systems to our muscle and skeletal system. Allowing our entire body to perform better when our nervous system is running on all cylinders.
Interesting chiropractic tidbit, chiropractic treatment is not always about pain. We work with cases now related to ear infections to constipation. But did you know during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, chiropractic gained unexpected attention. While medical treatments were limited and mortality rates were high, anecdotal reports from chiropractic clinics suggested that patients under chiropractic care had significantly lower death rates compared to the general population.
Chiropractors focused on supporting the nervous system and improving overall resilience — which, many claimed, helped the body’s natural defenses do their job. Though the historical data is not rigorously controlled by modern scientific standards, the event propelled chiropractic into the national spotlight and helped solidify it as a respected healthcare discipline.
How chiropractic works today
Fast forward to now — chiropractic care has evolved with research, technology, and holistic health as its focus. The training parallels a primary care provider’s education. One of the biggest differences is when treating disease’s such as type 2 diabetes or gastrointestinal conditions, doctors of chiropractic address the root cause of the disease and support the body to heal itself fully. Today’s chiropractors unleash the power of the body with every adjustment - helping the body:
Reduce nerve interference, allowing better brain-body communication.
Help restore joint mobility and alignment after injuries or everyday stress.
Support function, balance, and movement for people of all ages.
Offer nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle guidance for total wellness.
Modern chiropractic care enhances the conversation between our TRILLIONS of cells — making it a cornerstone for people wanting the be their best!
What makes it a POWERHOUSE
In our screen-heavy, stress-filled, “sit-too-much” world, chiropractic care offers something extremely powerful andrefreshingly simple: movement, alignment, and reconnection. It helps the body perform as it’s designed to — adaptable, strong, and self-healing.
So whether you’re chasing a personal record, healing from an injury, or just trying to get through your day with less stiffness and more energy, chiropractic care is both an art and science — one that’s been helping people for well over a century.
From a humble adjustment in 1895 to holistic wellness in 2025, chiropractic continues to remind us that sometimes, the best way to move forward… is to turn on our innate human potential with chiropractic adjustments.
