First Foods

Transitioning your child from breast milk to solid foods can sometimes be confusing and there is no reason to rush solids. Don't be fooled that introducing solids will be a "magic cure" to help your little one sleep through the night. Starting too early can result in allergies due to an immature digestive system.

The following are signs that your little one is ready for solids:

  • Can sit up unattended
  • Can pick up small objects
  • Shows interest in the food you are eating
  • Has begun teething
  • When given food, can demonstrate swallowing vs. pushing the food back out with the tongue

The following book and article give comprehensive information on which foods to introduce and when.
