Changes to your diet can relieve allergy symptoms.
Spring is officially here with flowers in bloom and the pollen levels rising. Although a beautiful time of year, it can be very difficult for those suffering with allergies. Allergies may occur in the body as a result of inflammation. In the First Line Therapy program we advise our patients to avoid foods which can contribute to inflammation. Some common inflammatory foods include corn, soy, wheat and other gluten containing grains, peanuts, eggs, dairy and sugar. Adding appropriate probiotics and digestive enzymes can help support your digestive system and allow your body to more easily assimilate the foods you are eating and the pollen you are exposed to without promoting an inflammatory reaction. To learn more about how our First Line Therapy lifestyle program can help you manage your allergy symptoms, visit www.lpwellness.com.
Boost Immunity
Spring Detox Remedy:
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine support and strengthen the systems of the body that are involved in the production of Qi energy. By building up your supply of Qi, and facilitating the free flow of it through the body, symptoms and signs related to allergies can be greatly reduced or eliminated. Traditional Chinese Medicine can be used as a prevention as well as to treat the root of allergy symptoms by reawakening and re-energizing the self healing capacity of the body. To boost your immune system at this time, a very effective food remedy is the mung bean. The mung bean is a cleansing legume and is supportive to treat the root of your allergy symptoms. The following recipe is for the combination of mung beans with rice, these two combined are easily digestible and a great way to boost your overall immunity and nourish your whole body.
Mung Bean and Rice Meal
- 4 1/2 quarts water
- 1 cup mung beans (soaked over night)
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 1 tsp crushed ginger
- 1 small diced onion
- 2 cloves of crushed garlic
- 2 to 8 cups vegetables
- 2 tb olive oil
- 1/2 tsp crushed red chiles (optional)
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp ground cumin
- 2 tsp sea salt, or more to taste
Set the water to boil in a 6-8 qt pot. Clean beans of any debris and rinse well. Add them to the water and boil until they start to split, about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the other ingredients. Clean rice in the same manner as the beans. Peel and chop the ginger root, onions, and garlic. Add rice to beans. Chop the other ingredients in the order they are listed and add them to the mix. Heat the oil in a small pan over medium heat, add all the spices, and let them sizzle for 30 seconds, then stir in vegetables and cook for approximately 5 minutes. Add this to the bean mix. As the rice starts to break up, lower the heat to medium and stir occasionally. Continue to cook, uncovered, until all the ingredients are very well done and a bit mushy. Add sea salt to taste. You may also place in a crockpot to cook overnight.

Buy Fresh, Buy Local
Visit your local farmer's market this Spring for tender greens, like spinach, watercress and baby lettuces. Asparagus, leeks, radishes, sugar snap peas and new red potatoes are all at their peak now. Make a delicious leek and potato soup and serve it with a salad of baby lettuce, watercress and radish.
You can also visit your local coop or fish market & ask for wild Pacific salmon, which will be arriving from Alaska and the Pacific Northwest in April and May. Season the salmon with olive oil, salt and pepper and roast it on the grill or in the oven.

H1N1 & Influenza Vaccination
Facts you may not know:
There has been a lot of information recently about the H1N1 vaccination. Here are a few facts that may have not made the media coverage.
• Vaccines create temporary, cell mediated immunity but ultimately weaken your body's natural humoral immunity.
• Thimerserol; ( a form of mercury ) is still being used with all of the flu vaccinations and will be part of the H1N1 vaccination. ( Other known heavy metals and toxins are part of vaccinations.)
• The FDA is fast tracking the production of the H1N1 vaccine with only a few weeks of testing done on only a few hundred children and adults before being given to students in schools in October.
• H1N1 will fall under the EUA ( Emergency Use Authorization) act that was passed in 2001; which will allow drug companies protected liability if injury occurs.
Please visit www.nvic.org for additional facts & information on vaccinations.
The following guidelines will help to boost your immune system and prevent against influenza!

Backpack Safety!
Source: MCA
Backpacks can be the leading cause of back and shoulder pain for millions of children and adolescents. As students begin to head back to school, the Minnesota Chiropractic Association (MCA) would like to shed light on backpack safety. Here are a few tips as we make our way back into the classrooms.
The backpack should have two padded adjustable straps in addition to a padded back. A heavy backpack that is not worn with both straps can cause a disproportionate shift of weight to one side of the body, leading to neck and back spasms as well as poor posture.
The size of the backpack is very important as well. The backpack should not hang more than four inches below the waistline, this could cause extra weight on the shoulders causing the child to lean too far forward when walking.
The MCA recommends that a child should never carry more than 10 percent of their body weight. Make sure there are enough compartments in the backpack to distribute the weight evenly; focusing the heaviest items closest to the body.
We wish everyone a safe and happy first week back to school!

Flu Shots
The public is urged by the medical community to get a flu shot each year. Unfortunately, the whole story isn't often shared. A strong and healthy immune and nervous system is what prevents illness. Some of the ingredients in a flu shot are a guess each year and the rest are toxic chemicals that you and your children aren't told about, including mercury. Follow the link below for ingredients. These chemicals in vaccinations and the flu shot are so harmful that over $100,000 has been offered to any MD willing to drink the ingredients. So far there are no takers. Click here to read more.
A Canadian news program gave their opinion of flu shots/vaccines. This is so true it is scary. Watch for yourself, "What's in a Flu Shot?" on YouTube.

Gardasil
Gardasil is the vaccination introduced to "prevent" cervical cancer. The marketing campaign was genius, with the quotes "cancer from a virus" and "I don't want to be one more" It was recommended by the medical community for all teen and pre-teen girls. There is much more to this story, including serious, even fatal side effects.
